Loram is looking for a Machine Operator 1 to join our Operations team in Ottawa, ON. This is a field-based position working on railway maintenance and inspection equipment operating, maintaining, and repairing the machinery that keeps trains moving safely across North America. What You’ll Be Doing
- Operating railway maintenance equipment:Â You’ll run Loram’s on-track MOW equipment and vehicles in both operating and travel modes, with supervision.
- Conducting safety briefings:Â You’ll lead comprehensive job briefings during operations, maintenance shifts, and while performing maintenance tasks.
- Following safety protocols:Â You’ll consistently follow safe work processes, understand on-track safety, and know how to locate and operate emergency equipment.
- Performing machine inspections:Â You’ll inspect equipment to identify problems, defects, changes, and hazards, and communicate conditions to supervisors.
- Making common repairs:Â You’ll perform maintenance and repairs according to schedules and policies, and report parts used accurately.
- Understanding machine functions:Â You’ll describe gauge and HMI functions as they relate to machine operation.
- Completing administrative reporting:Â You’ll document daily field reporting, personal expenses, field lodging, and other administrative tasks as needed.
- Working with technology:Â You’ll use basic computer skills and data systems to support operations.
What You’ll Need
Experience:
- Internal candidates:Â 3+ months experience working with Loram equipment or equivalent in a 24/7 environment. Some assignments require Excavator experience.
- External candidates:Â 2+ years demonstrated technical skills in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and machine operations. 2+ years demonstrated ability to learn, communicate verbally and in writing, and apply best practices.
- 1+ year experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator (Backhoe, Excavator, or alike).
- Heavy Maintenance-Construction equipment maintenance experience.
- Basic administration computer skills and working knowledge of data systems.
Licenses-Certifications:
- Maintain Railroad Certifications
- CPR/First Aid
- Valid Driver’s License
- Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain Class B (preferred for Aurora roles)
Aurora-specific requirements:
- Minimum 1 year computer or technology background
- 1 year working knowledge of MS Windows
- Preferred radiation experience

- Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check upon hire and annually thereafter.
