The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is seeking a qualified individual to perform advanced work in the operation of heavy and light equipment within the MAL Division – Offender Transport. This full-time position is based in Rosharon, Texas, and involves overseeing and coordinating the maintenance, operation, and repairs of equipment, as well as serving as a lead worker providing direction to others. You will operate light and heavy equipment and commercial vehicles in the transportation and delivery of materials, supplies, and equipment, while also supervising and training inmates in loading, transporting, and distributing goods. This role requires a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) and a CDL Medical Examiner’s certification. The monthly salary is $4,621.85 (RET 2.5% Less) plus hazardous duty pay.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the operation of or operate light and heavy equipment and commercial vehicles for transportation and delivery of materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Perform or oversee preventive maintenance inspections, routine servicing, and operator preparation of vehicles and equipment; report malfunctions.
  • Ensure safe and secure storage of cargo; review and verify inventory and shipping documents; report damages or shortages.
  • Exercise vigilance to prevent theft, damage, and attempted escapes during loading, unloading, and transporting.
  • Ensure required documentation is accurate, complete, and accessible according to interstate transport regulations.
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports of activities and equipment repairs.
  • Provide supervision, instruction, and training to inmates in safe loading, transporting, and distributing goods, and in preparing required records and reports.
  • Maintain security of tools, machinery, and equipment.
  • Respond to emergency situations.
  • Perform various correctional and custodial support functions.
  • Assist in maintaining security of assigned inmates.
  • Perform a variety of marginal duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED required.
  • Experience in warehouse operations, inventory and stock control, and supply methods and procedures preferred.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy and light equipment preferred.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of tractor-trailer rigs preferred.
  • Correctional custody or law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) required.
  • Valid CDL Medical Examiner’s certification statement issued within the last two years required.
  • Must be registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Must successfully complete the current TDCJ freight transportation road test after interview.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and statutes.
  • Skill to operate tractor-trailer rigs and related equipment.
  • Skill to train and supervise inmates.
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs and ladders, identify colors, hear, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 45 lbs. and over, perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle and motor equipment.
  • Ability to work in various conditions including inside/outside, around moving machinery, with constant noise, fumes, dust, grease, and travel by car, van, bus, and airplane.
